2007 - 2008
It is my pleasure as the new Chairman to present the 16th annual report of the Water Services Corporation. This privilege was made possible following a smooth transition from my predecessor Mr Michael Falzon.
In comparison with all other Mediterranean regions, Malta has the lowest water resources index (m3/capita/year), but has the highest water competition index (inhabitants/hm3/year). Pressures on water resources are increasing mainly as a result of population growth, increased living standards, illegal extraction of ground water and pollution. These are aggravated by climate change and variations in natural conditions. Using water resources sustainably whilst ensuring that a quality and reliable service is provided, is challenging for the Corporation because of the many factors involved.
