Barkat Brochure
Inaugurated in June 2011, this plant can treat about 60,000 cubic meters of domestic sewage per day, which is around 80% of all the wastewater in Malta. The catchment area of this plant is approximately from the Victoria LInes southwards.
It was designed around a fixed-media filter treatment process to reduce its footprint as well as to benefit from the operational advantages of this system.
This plant is also equipped with anaerobic sludge digestion to produce biogas which in turn is used to generate around 1mW of electricity. This minimises the plant's dependency on the national grid during normal operation and in the event of a power cut. The Ta' Barkat plant was funded from the EU 2007-2013 Structural Funds Program with a co-financing rate of 85% EU Funding and 15% local funding.
