The Training & Development Section forms part of the Institute of Water Technology of the Water Services Corporation.  This section provides classroom and on-site training for employees within the Water Service Corporation. 

 

Primarily, training courses for the Water Services Corporation are organized either:


(a) as part of a training programme originating from the Training Needs Analysis (TNA); or

(b) as part of a training programme originating from the Training and Development Section.

 

Depending on the extent and level of training required, the Training and Development Section may opt to follow one of the following three lines of action:

(i)       design, organize and coordinate the training course in-house,

(ii)      design, organize and coordinate the training course in collaboration and in agreement with other training organization/s,

(iii)    use standard or established courses provided by other training organizations.

 

The aim of the section is to enable staff to develop the necessary attitudes, skills and knowledge to meet and satisfy customer requirements. In order to achieve this aim, the section implements training on a Quality Management Systems based on ISO 9001:2015.

The Institute of Water Technology is licensed as a Further Education Institution (License No: 2022-002 by the Malta Further & Higher Education Agency.

Target Audience

Site supervisors that monitor and control trenching and pipelaying projects.

Course Information

This course will provide the necessary tools for site supervisors to carry out quality assurance and control.

It entails several information on the material composition of the infrastructure, methods and execution of works, trenching specifications, respective infrastructure quality tests and information on any documentation that is needed to certify the infrastructure.

 

This course provides valuable details and guidance on WSC works to WSC personnel and other entities such as Local Councils, Infrastructure Malta, road construction contractors, or any other third party that has an interest or investment in road construction/formation or infrastructure works.

It can be referred to by any person with multiple level of experience in pipelaying and infrastructure works. Thus, both the renowned, experienced site supervisor and even new recruits that will supervise works can attend this course

Passed the entry criteria set for new recruits.

Non WSC employees are to provide a letter of reference from their employer stating that they are interested in following the course.

Course will start from scratch in view that course is aimed for anyone with no experience.

Overall Course Objectives

On completing the course, participants will:

  • be familiar with the basic principles of flow and pressure in water systems,
  • be familiar with standard plans and schematics formats and with symbols,
  • be able to examine and discuss excavation practice and procedure including safety aspects and utilization of plant,
  • be able to supervise the re-instatement of manholes and chambers in roads to the required standards,
  • know how to review the main technologies used in mains laying,
  • be capable of check that new services are laid down to the required specifications,
  • be able to check that service pipes repairs and alterations have been carried out effectively,
  • be familiar with the disinfection of water mains,
  • be able to deal with customers and enhance the Corporation’s image,
  • be capable of carry out work using health & safety measures,
  • know how to use basic digital technology,
  • know how on documentation of works carried out.

WSC personnel are required to undertake Award in Monitoring and Control of Trenching and Pipelaying Projects including Work-based Learning (27 ECTS)

 

Third party employees are required to undertake Award in Site Supervision of Trenching and Pipelaying Projects (8 ECTS) that includes Modules (Awards) 1 – 5.
