The Water Services Corporation will be carrying out major upgrade and maintenance works at the Gozo Polishing Plant throughout November 2025. During this period, the plant will be temporarily switched off, meaning that no New Water will be produced in Gozo for the month.

This planned downtime is a key part of the Corporation’s ongoing investment in Gozo’s water infrastructure. The works will ensure that the plant continues to operate efficiently, sustainably, and in line with the highest water quality standards.

One of the main projects involves the complete relining of the main reservoir that supplies New Water to Għar Ilma.

After technical evaluation, the Corporation concluded that the most efficient and long-term solution is to reline the reservoir with polyurea, a high-performance material widely used in modern water infrastructure. This intervention will eliminate water losses, enhance the reservoir’s structural integrity, and secure the long-term reliability of Gozo’s New Water system.

The tender for this project was issued and awarded earlier this year, and the works have been strategically planned for the rainy season, when demand for New Water is lowest. This approach ensures that no disruption occurs during the critical agricultural months while maximizing efficiency in project execution.

In parallel, several other essential upgrades will be completed during this 4–5 week period, including:

• Installation of a new bioreactor aeration system, improving energy efficiency and treatment performance.
• Replacement of UF and RO membranes within the polishing process, maintaining top water quality standards.
• Upgrade of the centrifuge system, enhancing the overall process reliability and operational flexibility of the plant.

These coordinated interventions form part of the Corporation’s wider strategy to continuously modernize its facilities and ensure that both Gozo and Malta benefit from a secure, sustainable, and high-quality water supply.

The Water Services Corporation thanks the public and the agricultural community for their cooperation as it carries out these essential works. This investment will ensure that Gozo’s water infrastructure remains resilient, efficient, and ready to meet future demand.
