Over 6000 samples of water are tested on an annual basis so as to ensure that the water reaching the customer is fit for drinking.

The WSC Laboratory is ISO 17025 accredited in microbiology in the following parameters

  • Total Coliforms
  • E.coli
  • Enterococcus faecalis
  • Total Bacterial Counts
  • Legionella spp.
  • Such tests are also suitable and may be performed on all other types of water
Total Coliforms, E. Coli, EnterococciColiforms include bacteria that are found in water that has been in contact with soil, human or animal waste. The presence of these bacteria can only be detected by lab analyses even though the water looks clean and smells/tastes good. Most coliform bacteria do not harm humans; but some faecal coliforms can cause disease.  It is therefore highly recommended that water that is going to be in contact with people is regularly tested for coliforms and E.Coli.  A positive total coliforms sample is indicative of pollution in your water (well, reservoir etc); if sample is positive for E.Coli and/or enterococci it is a clear indication of contamination with animal waste. In both cases if a positive result is obtained, it is highly recommended to disinfect the water and seek the source of the problem.
Heterotrophic colony count and Legionella sp.Legionella is a type of bacterium found naturally in freshwater environments, which can become a health concern when it grows and spreads in human-made water systems such as roof tanks, geysers, stagnant lines etc.  If humans breathe in small droplets of water which is contaminated with Legionella (from showers, power wash, fountains etc) they can get Legionnaires’ disease. LN5/2006 specifies that bodies of water in non-domestic premises should be sampled and analysed by an accredited laboratory for heterotrophic colony count every month and for Legionella every six months.  WSC laboratory is accredited for sampling and analyses of Legionella.
